Chapter Twenty

Elias skimmed us inside a small banquet hall. It took less than a heartbeat for my subconscious brain to recognize the room full of predators staring ravenously at us. All kinds of warning bells went off as I took in the five giant men hulking around the dining table that ran the length of the room. Each one glowed with red magic tainted in black at the edges, surrounded by a barely restrained aura of violence.

I tried to swallow my fear and failed miserably. With the Traiten bands, I had no access to my own magic—empty or not—and no free will. The Rakken were hungry and clearly uncomfortable in their human skins. Silas had said that part of the process of making Rakken was to force them into their animal form until they forgot their humanity. I could see the animal in the way they shifted on their feet, their eyes darting at the slightest noise. Nostrils flared and eyes dilated, they watched me with near-palpable hunger.

Elias waved his hand at two empty places set for dinner. “Please, be seated.”

The bands around my wrists flared with magic, and I sat. I hadn’t decided to move, but the Traiten bands compelled me to act. It was the most terrifying thing I had ever experienced. I had no free will and no way to remove the Traiten bands myself.

I hid my shaking hands in my lap. The transition from the filthy barn to this formal dinner was shocking and almost comical. Across from us, the Rakken had clearly been instructed to dress up, and they tugged uncomfortably at the edges of their button-down shirts and ties.

Elias clapped his hands, and a man and a woman rushed into the room. They were Mundanes, and they were terrified. The woman had straw matted in her long brown hair and looked like she’d been sleeping on the floor of a barn for more than a few days. The man was equally disheveled, and his hands shook as he handed a steaming towelette to Elias.

Elias wiped his fingers and then unfurled his cloth napkin across his lap with a crisp snap of fabric. The Mundanes placed two silver-domed plates in front of us, filled two glasses with red wine, and retreated quickly to the side of the room. None of the Rakken were eating, although they seemed ravenous enough to attempt to take a bite out of me. One of them snapped his teeth at the Mundane woman as she hurried past him. She jumped, and the asshole laughed.

“Can you stop with all the mind games? Just tell me what you want from me,” I demanded.

Elias scooted his chair closer to the table. “First, we should clear the air. I am appalled about the kidnapping of your kin. I never would have resorted to such an act against a woman in her condition, but I am grateful we have a chance to talk regardless.”

“Wait. Are you saying you didn’t kidnap Gia?” I suddenly remembered the strange way Elias had behaved at the barn.
